Leaving centre based care to become a nanny - Four Corners story

Many Educators leave Centre based care because they are disheartened with the profit over quality when it comes to child care. Over the last 10 years child care has been used as a political football. Lobby groups and media touting the wage debate as the main reason the early childhood education sector is bleeding quality staff. In reality that is the tip of the iceberg. My passion is quality flexible child care and I left centre based care many years ago. Simply because I witnessed the change from community based not for profit child care be consumed by what I call the fast food of child care and the drop in quality and care. Corporations with $ signs in their eyes with pop up centres all around the country. A once proud sector where teachers fought for recognition and quality standards and a nationally quality framework turning into a system where childrens needs are not being met and how much money shareholders can make.

I'm grateful that families have the option of child care however, but at what cost to our future generation?

Ironically over the same period of time I've seen a constant stream of educators joining the nanny sector. Working in dream jobs where the pay is great and so are the conditions. Children remain in their home enjoying close bonds with their nanny and families enjoy the option of flexible and quality home based care.

Nannies who say they absolutely love their job and could never return to centre based care.

After tonight's Four Corners investigation into Australia's failing child care and both sides of Government throwing $ band aids at the problem I hope that parents, regulatory bodies will now see that much more needs to be done to overhaul a terminally Ill system.

Educators that love their job but want better for children, we are hiring.
